The role of your partner

Stronger together

Your partner is an indispensable part of the team. From timing the contractions to helping you try different positions, you do this together. After the birth, it is a special moment when your partner is allowed to cut the umbilical cord, as a symbol of your new start as a family.

Ensuring peace and confidence together is our aim, so that you can both look back on this special day with pride.

We’d be happy to ring you back

Answers to your initial questions

If this is your first baby, please ring us as soon as you have been you have been having contractions for an hour, coming every 4 minutes and last for about a minute. These contractions gradually become stronger and more painful. Have you given birth before? If so, please follow the personalised advice on when to call that we discussed during your consultation.

Please note: If you are worried, experience bright red bleeding or are in any doubt, always ring your midwife straight away on 06 5354 8631.

When your waters break, always check the colour of the amniotic fluid carefully. It should be clear, white or pale pink. Is the amniotic fluid green or brown? If so, please ring us straight away. If the amniotic fluid is clear and you are not having contractions, you can ring us straight away during the day; if this happens at night, you can wait until the following morning. As there is now a risk of infection, you must not take a bath or have sex from this point onwards (you may, of course, have a shower).

Yes, a medical indication means that the gynaecologist at the hospital has ultimate responsibility for your care. This may be known in advance, or it may arise during labour. Although medical care is then taken over by the hospital team, we try to remain involved wherever possible to provide personal support. The most important thing is that you and your baby receive the right care in the safest place.
