Prenatal Screening

During pregnancy, you have the option of having tests carried out to check your baby’s health. We call this antenatal screening. It is good to know that these tests are never compulsory; you decide for yourselves what you want to know and which choices are right for you.

"We’ll support you in making a choice that feels right, by providing the right information and giving you our full attention."

Staying up to date

There are two types of test you can choose from. Firstly, there is the test for chromosomal abnormalities via the NIPT (a blood test). Alternatively, you can opt for a screening for physical abnormalities via the 13-week ultrasound scan and the 20-week ultrasound scan.

The aim of these tests is to provide you with information in good time. It is important to think in advance about what the results might mean for you. We are here to discuss these options with you at your leisure, so that you can make an informed decision about whether you wish to have these tests carried out.

Let’s work together to find what suits you best

Would you like to know more about the tests, or are you finding it difficult to make a choice? If so, we’ll arrange a detailed counselling session. During this session, we’ll work with you to assess your needs and answer any questions you may have. We’re here to listen and provide objective information, without passing judgement on your decision.

Whether you choose to have all the tests, a selection of them, or no screening at all: at Belle Vie, we’ll make sure you’re comfortable with your choice. What’s more, you can decide to stop the tests at any stage of the process.

We’d be happy to ring you back

Questions in uncertain times

Answers to your questions about screening

No, the NIPT and the scans are entirely voluntary. It is up to you to decide whether you want this information and what you would do with the results.

As the name suggests, these take place around the 13th and 20th weeks of your pregnancy. The NIPT can usually be carried out from 10 weeks’ pregnancy onwards.

Should any evidence of an abnormality be found, we will discuss this with you straight away. We will guide you through the process of any follow-up investigations and offer the emotional support you need during this time.
