Contraception
You’ll soon be fertile again after the birth of your baby. It’s therefore a good idea to start thinking about contraception in good time. Whether you opt for hormonal methods, wish to maintain your natural cycle or are looking for long-term protection, we’re happy to advise and support you in choosing the option that best suits your body and lifestyle.
"Your body, your choice; we offer the expertise and peace of mind you need to get off to a personalised start."
Everyone is welcome
Did you know that anyone can come to Belle Vie for contraception services? Whether you’ve just given birth with us, were previously under the care of another practice, or don’t (yet) wish to have children: our midwives are trained to fit IUDs and hormonal implants, and to prescribe the pill.
During a consultation, we take the time to carry out a thorough medical history review. We discuss your medical history and any previous experiences, and work with you to find the method that suits you best. In this way, we make contraception accessible, reassuring and professional.
IUDs & Implanon
We fit both hormonal IUDs (Mirena/Kyleena) and copper IUDs (T-Safe) from 12 weeks after giving birth. You can also come to us for the Implanon implant (insertion from 6 weeks). We will issue the prescription, after which you can collect the product yourself from the chemist’s.
The Pill & Prescriptions
What can you expect?
The conversation
We’ll discuss your preferences: would you prefer a method with or without hormones? How important is a regular cycle to you? Together, we’ll find the best option for you.
The recipe
Once you’ve made your choice, we’ll issue the prescription. You can then collect your contraception (coil, implant or pill) yourself from your local chemist.
The installation
Fitting an IUD or Implanon takes just a few minutes. We recommend taking 1000 mg of paracetamol 45 minutes beforehand to ensure a comfortable experience.
The audit
After an IUD has been fitted, we can carry out a follow-up ultrasound scan (around 6 weeks later) to check that everything is sitting perfectly in place.

Answers to practical questions
How much does contraception cost?
Most insurers cover the full cost of the procedure carried out by the midwife. The device itself (e.g. an IUD, approx. €75 to €132) You usually pay for this yourself or through your supplementary insurance. Always check this with your health insurer beforehand to avoid any surprises.
When can I have an IUD fitted after giving birth?
We fit coils from 12 weeks after giving birth or a caesarean section. By that time, the uterus and cervix will have recovered sufficiently to allow for safe insertion. The Implanon implant can be inserted as early as 6 weeks after the birth.
Can I also come to you to have an IUD removed?
Yes, certainly. Even if your coil was fitted by a GP or gynaecologist, you can come to us to have it removed or replaced straight away.
