Moxa Therapy

Around the 32nd week of your pregnancy, we’ll check your baby’s position. If your baby is in a breech position, it’s good to know that there’s a lovely, natural way to increase the chances of a spontaneous turn: moxibustion.

"Give your baby the space and encouragement to find the right path for themselves."

How does moxibustion work?

The power of deep heat

Moxibustion originates from traditional Chinese medicine. By applying heat to a specific pressure point on the side of the little toe using a moxa stick (a stick made from dried mugwort), we stimulate the mobility of the uterus.

This leads to increased activity in the baby, which significantly increases the chance that your baby will still turn into a head-down position on its own, to as much as 75%. It is a safe, painless method which you can also carry out very easily at home after a brief demonstration at our practice.

Treatment at home

After our practical demonstration, you’ll start practising at home. For two weeks, you’ll carry out the therapy every day (for about 20 minutes). It’s a lovely moment of calm for both you and your baby, and your partner will often carry out the treatment.

Next steps

If, after two weeks of moxa treatment, the baby is still in a breech position, there’s no need to panic. At around 36 weeks, we’ll then discuss the options for an external version (turning the baby) at the hospital.

Questions about Moxa

Yes, moxibustion is completely safe for both the mother and the baby. No physical pressure is applied to your tummy; we simply encourage the baby to move around more. The heat is pleasant and the treatment is painless.

The ideal time to start moxibustion therapy is between 33 and 35 weeks of your pregnancy. During this period, the baby still has plenty of amniotic fluid and space to move around.

This varies depending on your health insurer and your supplementary cover. As we provide the instructions during a regular consultation or a brief, specific session, the costs are often quite reasonable. The moxa sticks themselves are available from us.
